2007 Peregrine Ridge Winemaker’s Reserve

Heathcote Shiraz

The bright garnet-red colour is outstanding given the age of the wine, and the bouquet and medium-bodied palate do not disappoint; intense black cherry, licorice, spice and French oak come through in an unbroken streak, silky tannins joining the harmonious, lingering finish.  Finding that all of this was achieved with sky-high alcohol from a drought is a huge surprise."

Region: Heathcote, Victoria

Winemakers: Graeme Quigley & Sue Kerrison

Background: Our “Winemaker’s Reserve” is a single vineyard, barrel selected wine based on the use of French oak barrels.  Small parcels of fruit are carefully selected during the winemaking process and matched to barrels at the press.  The 2007 was matured in 100% new oak for 23 months prior to bottling.  The aim of the wine is to showcase what can be achieved with the very best fruit grown on our unique terroir on the east side of the Mt Camel Range 25km north of Heathcote. The grapes were picked over a 2 week period from 12 March to 27 March at the optimum ripeness for each block. All fruit was small batch fermented for between 10 and 14 days and then immediately pressed via basket press to barrel.

Vintage conditions: 2007 was a hot dry season that followed a dry, frosty Spring. Vine growth was even, with the drought conditions producing shoots of medium vigour.  Summer was hot and extremely dry throughout the ripening season. This produced small, concentrated berries with intense rich dark cherry, blackberry and plum fruit flavours.  These growing conditions have produced an extremely intense wine with rich savoury fruit character and good natural acidity.

Colour: Glass staining garnet to purple, with purple to garnet hue.

Nose: Intense, rich dark cherry and blackberry fruit supported by hints of savoury oak, complex spice and earthiness.

Palate: Intense dark cherries and ripe blackberries, with a hint of savoury spice. This wine is enhanced by silky tannins and superbly integrated new French oak.  A wine of great finesse with a long, persistent finish.  Drink to beyond 2022.
